After reading this book, I want to howl! The good kind of howling. I love this book, and hope to be able to read the rest in the series. This is a standalone book, but also the beginning of a series revolving around the Desert Moon pack.
Ms Lowe has taken the wolf shifter to a new high with this tale, giving us a “mixed breed” and adding in a long-thought folklore in the world of the wolf shifter, and bringing them together as fate decided. They will have to climb over many obstacles before they find their HEA, if in fact they do. The characters are unique, showing both strength and weakness, and love in all forms.
Rae has already been through more than a she-wolf should have to experience in her young life, but fate seems to grin upon her when she receives the transfer she's requested, finding herself sent off to the Twin Moon Ranch. Here, she meets Zack, half wolf, half coyote, but all alpha and all male. Her wolf knows he's her fated mate, but will all of the terror of her past over rule her chances at love? Zack has always been a loner, never fitting in with the rest of the pack because of his mixed breading. Will he finally find his niche in the pack? Will fate finally smile down on him and give him a mate to love and cherish?
Loved this book, and definitely looking forward to more from this author. Well done!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Rae is a werewolf with a secret. She doesn’t trust most people, especially alpha males, and she hates living under the horrible alpha of her current pack. When she finally receives a long-awaited transfer to the Twin Moon Ranch in Arizona, she doesn’t know what to expect but finds a kinship to the earth while avoiding the other wolves at her new home. But she can’t avoid Zach, a mix bred, and her inner wolf knows he’s her mate. A mate she never wanted.
Half coyote and half wolf, Zach knows what it’s like to be an outcast. His two animals constantly nag at Zach and argue with each other in his head, but they’re in agreement when they sniff out Rae. She’s their mate. His best friend, Ty, is the reigning alpha’s son and set to inherit the pack someday. He’s just as lonely as Zach, probably more so, but he’s obedient when it comes to his father. The cruel alpha, Old Tyrone, demands that no one touches the new she-wolf, but Zach can’t help the pull between him and Rae.
Rae and Zach are very likeable characters. The reader feels their hesitancy, loneliness, and alienation, and the strength they both find to love and trust the other.
Though I really liked this shifter story, the fight scene with the bad guy at the end was a little predictable. Rae’s actions over a perceived betrayal irked me, but I understand she needed personal time to fight her own demons before she gave herself fully to her destined mate.
My favorite scene is Zach and Ty’s “play” fight. I love a good bromance, and these two sexy shifters have that down pat.
This is a prequel novella to the Wolves of Twin Moon Ranch series, and I’m definitely interested in reading the other books.

This standalone prequel to the Wolves of Twin Moon Ranch Series is captivating and beautifully written. I am a fan of Anna Lowe's works, but this story and series remain my favorites. I first read this novella in an anthology, then reread it as part of Masters of the Hunt anthology, then purchased the single for my e-library. It is that good.
Zach is a half wolf/half coyote shifter and tracker who lives on the fringe of the Twin Moon Ranch pack. Rae is an unmated she wolf who ran from an abusive Alpha in Colorado to a Nevada pack that traded her to the Twin Moon Ranch pack in Central AZ. She comes from a long line of she wolves with a special ability, one that is highly coveted for it's rarity and one she has kept secret to maintain her freedom and independence. But Zach triggers something she has never felt toward an alpha male and Zach finds he is also drawn to the female he has been ordered to keep the other males away from. Neither knows about the terms of her trade or the plans the TMR Alpha has for Rae that could cost Zach his life. But an abusive alpha pack male from Colorado has tracked Rae to Arizona, and he has his own plans for her, including taking her by force if necessary.

This was a nice quick read with some suspense as to what Rae was. I was expecting something spectacular but slightly disappointed with the outcome. Although overall the author did create enough suspense to keep you interested. The whole alpha and mate storyline is one that's used for wolves stayed true and I was glad to see that. Not sure if I will move on to the next installment or not as of right now. Was it worth my time? Yes. Was it a favorite? Unfortunately, no. Would I recommend this? Why not??? It wouldn't hurt. If you like romance, and strong male and female characters then this novel would work.

Book 0.5 Desert Hunt in Twin Moon Ranch series by Anna Lowe.
This is a first read by this author for me and I’ve got to say I’m not disappointed.
Zach is a wolf/coyote shifter and alpha but not alpha of his pack. He’s happy leaving the responsibility up to his old unhappy leader Old Tyrone and his son Ty who is Zach’s bff.
Rae is a very strong willed wolf shifter being bullied and suppressed in her old pack. That is until the Twin Moon Pack offer to take her in.
Instantly Zach knows Rae his mate but with having a dark past with violent crazy ex’s she want to keep very clear but unfortunately Rae and Zach’s shifter sides have made their mines up.
I love that this is insta love but the human sides try to dominate with excuses but eventually wolf/coyotes get there way.
Rae is totally badass and really stands her grown and puts up a good fight when needed, I also love that she doesn’t expect Zach to rescue or save her but it’s lovely when he does but doesn’t think of her as weak or in need of protection.
Really looking forward to more in series especially as I got the next three books on audible in box set for a great price.
    Great story and live HEA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anna Lowe has written a book which I read in one sitting. Her characters are very well crafted. Most enjoyable.
Reviewed in Australia on March 10, 2018
This book by Anna Lowe is the prequel to the stories of the Wolves of Twin Moon Ranch.
However, the book does not begin with the Wolves at Twin Moon Ranch but with Rae, a wolf-shifter with a jealously guarded secret, who lives with another pack some distance away. This pack still adheres to many of the old beliefs rather than embracing more modern, less restrictive rules for running the pack. The alpha is a cruel leader, willing to punish, or worse, any of the pack who go against him, particularly females. While protecting her secretive past and in doing so coming up against the structures of the brutal alpha, Rae requests to be transferred to another pack.

To her surprise Rae finds she is to be transferred to Twin Moon Ranch where she hopes it may be easier to live with the pack there. What she does not know is her old alpha is hoping to be able to form a strategic alliance with Twin Moon by offering Rae to be mated to the older son of Tyrone, another old-fashioned, tyrannical alpha. But Tyrone’s son, Ty, a childhood friend of Zack, is not interested in mating with Rae.

Among others, you will meet Zack, a hybrid wolf/coyote shifter who is shunned by his pack; Jed, a rogue shifter from Rae’s past, and a miscellaneous cast of both good and bad shifters. You will finally discover Rae’s secret; see the romance between Zack and Rae begin to blossom until a misunderstanding between them forces her to run from the pack. There is a showdown between Zack, Tyrone and Ty which ends when Jed and some new found friends try to crash the party.

In the end, good triumphs over bad and the two lovers are reunited to live, we suppose, happily ever after. There are several more books in this series to enjoy and I hope to encounter Rae and Zack in some of them.

Anna Lowe has done an excellent job in crafting this story, fleshing out the characters so you can feel their emotions, their hopes and fears. You will cheer for the good guys, boo and hiss at the bad guys and reach for the next book in the series as soon as you finish this one. I read this book in one sitting and am about to do just that. I heartily recommend this book to readers of romances, shifters, good versus evil or just plain feel-good books.

I have written this review voluntarily and have not received any compensation for doing so.
